Improvised explosive device
An improvised explosive device (IED) is a bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military action. They may be partially comprised of conventional military explosives, such as an artillery round, attached to a detonating mechanism.
IEDs may be used in terrorist actions or in unconventional warfare by guerrillas or commando forces in a theater of operations. In the 2003–present Iraq War, IEDs have been used extensively against coalition forces and by the end of 2007 they have been responsible for approximately 40% of coalition deaths in Iraq.[1] They are also used extensively by cadres of the rebel Tamil Tiger (LTTE) organization against military and civilian targets in Sri Lanka.[2][3]
IEDs are often placed on the curb of roads so as to be detonated when vehicles or pedestrians pass by, and so are sometimes also known as roadside bombs.
The term originated in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community in the 1960s, with non-technical and media reporting use starting with the 2003 Iraq war.[citation needed]

- a suitable workplace, somewhere that the small screws and such won't get lost.
- Possibly a soldering kit and the ability to solder.
- a power source of some kind, batteries are a likely candidate.
- a good lighting source to ensure maximum visibility of the components you'll be working with.

Before we get too far into this I would like to point out that there are hobby shops all over that cater to this type of tinkering. They have many ready made kits available if you are interested more in the outcome than the process it takes to create your own. If you just have to get technical then please read through the following primer.Please take this as a beginner introduction to remote control device construction and by no means as a definitive collection of information on the subject. There are many others out there that have vast amounts of knowledge on the subject that may better suit your needs.

The remote control for your robot is the hand-held device that allows you to send radio frequencies that cause the robot to respond to your commands. The second component is the receiver that accepts the radio signal and translates it into a command that the robot can understand. The last component in the group is the servo that actuates the motion of the robot.

The best solution for creating a combination of robot and remote control is to purchase a ready made remote control with a functioning joystick and at least 2 buttons. The purpose of the buttons are for added control of your robot.
